Ermessenda

Synopsis

Change is inevitable. But what happens when a ruler tries to resist it?

Ermessenda de Carcassone lived through tumultuous times. As the 11th-century countess of Barcelona, Girona and Osona, she witnessed old Visigothic laws and ideas about how counts should rule give way to newer, feudal ideas about how society should be structured, igniting conflicts across the continent. In two acts, this opera depicts Ermessenda's struggle to maintain her power amid the shifting socio-political landscape of early medieval Catalonia, exploring what it means to hold on to one's beliefs when in a position of authority.
